Americans Driving Fewest Miles Since '03

Americans hit the brakes on driving in July, logging 2.5 percent fewer miles amid high gas prices and a struggling economy. Through the first seven months of the year, Americans have driven 1.715 trillion miles ? the lowest tally since 2003 ... Overall, driving has fallen 1.2 percent this year or 21.5 billion miles. As Americans drive less, they may be more likely to hold onto older vehicles. But the trend may change as gas prices have dropped sharply in recent weeks, and are below $3 a gallon in some retail locations.

Subaru Concept and Impreza!

Hot News!

We're going to see both the four- and five-door versions of the all-new 2012 Impreza at the New York Auto Show this week, but at the Shanghai motor show, Subaru lifted the wraps off a concept version of the hatchback model in a crossover guise. Named the XV Concept, the study essentially offers us our first glimpse at the successor of the North American market Impreza Outback Sport as well as the Impreza XV that is offered in Japan.

The lime-green XV Concept combines Subaru's all-wheel drive system with a jacked up suspension and an array of SUV-like styling cues. The five-door model measures 4,450mm in length, 1,800mm in width and 1,620 mm in height sporting a 2,635mm long wheelbase. It is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine linked to a CVT.

Exterior highlights include a protective armor of plastic add-ons around the wheel arches, side sills and on the lower part of the front and rear bumpers, along with large roof rails and splats of metallic trim here and there. The five-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels shod in 245/45 ZR19 tires complete the look.

As for the interior, the XV Concept gets a two-tone color theme with white leather seats and black plastics elsewhere. There's also a panoramic glass roof that extends from the front windscreen all the way to the rear, while Subaru fitted the XV with a futuristic touch-panel multi-information display in the center console.

Dan Perkins And Subaru Announce Mobile Internet for the Outback

What would a mobile Hot Spot mean to your family or business?  Dan Perkins Subaru is excited to announce the latest technology accessory from Subaru.

The new Subaru Mobile Internet system creates a Wi-Fi hotspot inside the Outback giving internet access to 10 or more users for up to 150 feet around the vehicle.   This gives Tailgating a whole new perspective! The Subaru Outback redefined the SUV, and offering Wi-Fi connectivity further expands this versatile vehicle's capability. Operating on the 3G network and working with all Wi-Fi enabled devices, Subaru Mobile Internet provides users a safe, fully encrypted connection with download speeds averaging 400kbps-1.2mbps. This uninterrupted Wi-Fi capability is designed for passenger access while the Outback is in motion.  Subaru Mobile Internet easily allows users to check email, surf the web or listen to Internet radio and even stream video and post to social networking sites. Outback passengers can check weather and traffic, download hiking trails, and even reserve a campsite while they're on the road. Multiple passengers can simultaneously use the Wi-Fi connection for their separate devices, including Wi-Fi capable laptop computers, netbooks, smart phones, game controllers, plus the new iPad® and iPod® Touch models.  Subaru Mobile Internet will engage your kids on long trips.

Subaru Mobile Internet technology is provided by Autonet Mobile, the world's first in-car Internet service provider. The Wi-Fi service can be added as a port or dealer-installed accessory to any 2011 Subaru Outback for an MSRP of $499, plus a $35 activation fee. A one-year subscription at $29 per month is required, and Subaru is including the first three months of service for free. Comprehensive user support is included through joint Subaru and Autonet Mobile customer service resources. Subaru Mobile Internet is a Genuine Subaru Accessory and is covered under the Subaru of America warranty.

Starting at an MSRP of $22,995, the 2011 Subaru Outback is offered in a wide range of four- and six-cylinder models. The Outback is smart-sized compared to other two-row crossover vehicles, featuring a mid-size interior in an easy-to-maneuver and off-road capable wagon body. Equipped with the Lineartronic? CVT (continuously variable transmission).

Car Button Could Tell if You're Tipsy

Auburn Hills, [Mich.]-based auto supplier Takata is working on a device that checks a driver's blood-alcohol level through the skin. Takata and its partner, TruTouch in Albuquerque, N.M., have received a $2.25-million grant from the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS), an industry group, to make the device commercially viable. The team is working to make its current breadbox-sized device that uses an infrared sensor to determine alcohol level small enough, cheap enough and unobtrusive enough to be put on the car's start button, said Kirk Morris, Takata's vice president of business development. Takata is aiming to get the cost down to approximately $200 each.
