Simply put, the Subaru Crosstrek is practically in a segment unto itself. However, it does have small crossover characteristics and, as such, MotorWeek recently included the latest model in its subcompact SUV challenge.
In general, subcompact SUVs try to offer the best of car and SUV worlds with efficiency, spaciousness, versatility, capability, maneuverability and more rhyming characteristics. However, most don't succeed at effectively balancing all of these attributes -- that is, we said most. The Crosstrek, on the other hand, boasts standard all-wheel drive, available advanced safety features, a potent powertrain, carlike driving dynamics, and a spacious wagon-like design -- not to mention pretty hip styling. It's an exceptionally well-rounded family vehicle.
Needless to say, there isn't much in the way of competition for the Crosstrek. We'll try not to spoil the results of the SUV challenge for you.
