Performance
The Forester only has one powertrain available, a 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine. This powertrain outputs 182 horsepower, 176 lb.-ft of torque and is attached to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and all-wheel-drive.
With this setup, the Forester can tow upwards of 1,500 pounds and around 3,000 pounds in the Wilderness trim. According to the EPA, the Forester averages about 26 miles per gallon in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.
Design
The look of the Forester is that of a station wagon, but with its all-wheel drive and increased ground clearance, it has all the capabilities of an SUV. As for its cabin, this is designed to be more practical, offering good visibility and driving position.
Though the interior is practical, it's still nicely finished, offering leather seats, door panels, and dash. There's also a textured plastic trim with gloss-black plastic on the center stack and chromed and matte-metallic plastic trims throughout.
Sit in the back of the Forester, and you'll find plenty of space for adults and cargo. There are 39.4 inches of legroom, 37.6 inches of headroom, and 26.9 cubic feet of space behind the seats. Fold the seats down, and the cargo area expands to 69.1 cubic feet.
Technology
Along with a comfortable and practical cabin, the interior is also full of great tech. Trims like the Base, Premium, and Sport come standard with a 6.5-inch display, but a larger eight-inch monitor is optional on the Sport and standard on the Limited and Touring.
The front of the touchscreen has two USB ports, and two more can be added so rear seat passengers can also charge their phones. Coming standard on the touchscreens is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, but an optional navigation system is available. Additionally, onboard Wi-Fi with a 4G LTE data connection is standard on all but the base Forester.
Safety Features
Safety is a priority for Subaru, and it's why they've equipped the Forester with its EyeSight suite of camera-based driver-assistance features. These features include automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. More advanced features, like blind-spot warning with a rear cross-traffic warning or evasive steering assist, are offered in the Sport trim or a higher model.
